How Redboard Works

Let's take a quick overview of Redboard. Firstly, you need to import your 3D set where all of your action is going to take place.

 

Secondly, you add in all of your characters

Now interactively layout your scene using your imported models, placing them in the positions you need for your shot and arranging your camera, as required.

 

Then draw the additional details and expressions that the frame needs to convey the action.

 

Once you are happy with the frame, simply save it and move on to the next, until your scene is finished - then all you need to do is export the data.

 

Redboard remembers all the information for each shot, so by importing that data into Maya, all of your characters and camera positions are instantly set up for you. This even includes an overlay of the drawn animation, so your animators can easily reference the corresponding storyboard frame.

 

Redboard also outputs a route sheet that you can use to keep track of all the scenes, comments and dialogue.

 

Once you have created an animatic from Redboard's storyboard panels, you can then read in the associated EDL (Edit Detail List) from any supported edit system, and Redboard will automatically update all of the timings to match, allowing you to transfer them directly to Maya. This means that all of your Maya scenes will be timed to match the animatic exactly, including camera and character movements between storyboard positions.
